Bighorn Canyon Artist in Residence Video – Fall 2016 – Mary Aten

Bighorn Canyon Artist in Residence Video

Below is a video of my favorite photos from my time at Bighorn Canyon as an Artist in Residence in fall 2016.  They include landscapes, ghost towns, Pryor mountain wild mustangs, cowboys, night photography, and Northern Lights.  The video includes scenes from Bighorn Canyon and the Bighorn Mountains.

Purpose of Artist in Residence Program

The general purpose of Artist in Residence programs is for the artist to focus on their work, without the distractions of daily life; to share their knowledge with the public, and spread the word about the beauty of the parks (at least this is my interpretation).  While I was there, I presented a slide show depicting my grandparent’s 1921 camping trip across the country, which included journal entries and photos.  I also held two outdoor workshops on photo composition.

Other Benefits of Artist in Residence Program

In addition to learning the about the area and the history, I hung out out with a great bunch of rangers.  Special thanks to Christy Fleming and the National Park Service.  Also Thank You to Lynn Richardson and Marilyn Feather, former Artist in Residents, who gave me tours of the area along with capturing great photos together.

Last art show of the fall season for me at Reeths Puffer High School 10/4 from 10-3 – 1545 Roberts Road

Reeths Puffer Art and Craft Show tomorrow

It has been a fun first summer/fall selling my photography.  Tomorrow is my last show of the fall season at Reeths Puffer High School  in Muskegon.  I have quite a few new photos, including a collection of night photography.  I’m also introducing photo tiles… we’ll see how that goes.  As usual, I’ll have my matted photos, note cards, and a few framed photos.  The image included with this post is a night photo of jetties on the beach at night….the same night that I was shooting star trails on the beach. This has been great fun, glad I did it when I did because the weather has turned.

My sister, Karen, will also be there with her beautiful stone/beach glass /drift wood mirrors and candles.

Hope to see you there and thanks for the business!  If I miss you, you can contact me through e-mail at mary@atenphoto.com.

New Prints – Muskegon Farmers Market Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning

photo of ghost waves

New Prints – Farmers Market Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning – Mary Aten Photography

I’ve matted up a lot of new prints for the Muskegon Farmers Market this week.  It has been a busy week taking pictures, printing with new paper, and matting.

Photo of Ghost Waves

It was fun taking photos last night after sunset with a slow shutter speed.  The result looks like ghost waves.  I’ve printed a sample on metallic paper and they look great.  One of my friends from Canton, Marion Krutty, named these “ghost waves”, so that is what I will call the series.  Stop over and take a look if you are at the market this week!  The print featured in this blog is a cropped sample.

Muskegon Farmers Market – Tuesday and Thursday Mornings

Fox photography

I’ll be selling my photography Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Muskegon Farmers Market through mid-October.

I’ll have matted prints and a canvas print or two at the farmers market.  All prints can be ordered in different sizes of prints and canvas.  I’ll also have note cards that are all printed and cut by hand.  I will usually also have a few of my sister’s picture frames that are made from Great Lakes stones, beach glass, and drift wood.

It has been fun meeting people at the market.

The featured image for this post is a fox that seems to get a lot of attention from the farmer’s market customers.

Thanks to all who have stopped by for looking at my work and for the great feedback!

At Muskegon Farmer’s Market most Tuesdays and Thursday mornings through early September

I will be at the Muskegon Farmer’s Market most Tuesdays and Thursday mornings through early September selling my photos and note cards.

We survived the local art fairs over the last two weekends.  My husband, Dennis, perfected the final touches on the tent.

The Muskegon farmer’s market is more relaxed and more fun.  It felt wonderful to spend the day doing what I love yesterday, making new images!

Hope to see you at the Muskegon Farmer’s Market or contact me at mary@atenphoto.com or 734-718-2311.  I have matted prints, framed prints, and images printed on canvas.

Dancing with Waves – Surfing Lake Michigan

Dancing with waves

I typically take nature photographs, but I also enjoy the interaction between man and nature.  On October 1, I could hear the waves roaring, so I went down to the break wall at Muskegon State Park.  I found people on surf boards, paddle boards and kite surfing boards.  They were having a glorious time!

Anyway, I sat on the wall and took pictures for over an hour.  I then went back to the car to find pen and paper so I could e-mail the pictures to some of the surfers.  I thought that I was almost done except for finding one of the surfers who left to go to work (I’ve got some good clues on finding him).  Anyway, one of the people who received my e-mailed photos asked about whether the photos were on a web-site so he could see others, so I thought that this was a good time to pick up on the web-site and blog.

The is a small sampling of the surfing photos in new surfing gallery.  Here is the link to the surfing gallery:  http://www.atenphoto.com/gallery/surfing/

I hope that you enjoy the photos.  Please feel free to share the link and comment on the blog!  Thanks for looking!

Matting for Portfolio Show

Sunset over Snowy Corn Field

I’ve been working on matting for our May 1 portfolio show.  Mine will be 20″x 24″ white window mats.  Julia, at the school’s production center taught me how to use the wall-mounted window mat cutter….. what a great piece of equipment and what a great teacher Julia is!  I found that the matting really improves some images.  For example, the featured image looks great matted, although I didn’t care much for it on the screen.

Added Abstract gallery to website in preparation for Portfolio Show

Monsoon in the Arizona Desert

I’ve added an abstract Landscape gallery to my website.  I’m updating the website with photos that I’ll be showing at the portfolio show coming up on May 1 at Washtenaw Community College at the Morris Lawrence Building from 5:00 to 7:00pm.  I’m pretty excited about the abstract photos, because generally these are Raw images taken in low light.  It is really fun to see what comes out of these photos that are pretty gray in color to begin with.  I hope that you like the Abstract Landscape gallery.  If you can make it to the portfolio show, all are welcome.  Here’s a link to the gallery.  http://www.atenphoto.com/gallery/abstract-landscape/

Arizona Photography

A good friend of mine just asked to see some of my photos from Arizona, so I added a page with landscape photographs from Sedona, Lake Powell and Grand Canyon.  There are also a few photos of a monsoon, which is wonderful to watch as long as you are in a car!  Here’s the link to the page of all of the Arizona photos on this website:  http://www.atenphoto.com/arizona-photos/.

Here’s one of my favorite photos of the monsoon.

Winter Photography

I’m back in the North country.  Although it felt a bit like spring today, there is still some snow and ice.  Winter photography can be interesting if you look for shape contrast, angles and color.  You can see these aspects in the following photo.  This time of year offers opportunities for more unique photos.  Check out other winter photos on my winter photo page http://www.atenphoto.com/winter-photos/

My Great Great Grandfather was a Photographer

My Great Great Grandfather was a professional photographer.  Below is a picture of my Great Grandfather, Great Grandmother, Grandfather and Aunt Margaret.  We believe that the photo was taken by my Great Great Grandfather.  My Grandfather was not a professional photographer, but he also took many great photographs.  More on my Grandfather in later posts….
